A housing cooperative, or co-op, is a legal entity, usually a corporation, which owns real estate, consisting of one or more residential buildings; it is one type of housing tenure. Housing cooperatives are a distinctive form of home ownership that have many characteristics that differ from other residential arrangements such as single family ownership, condominiums and renting
Basically a housing co-op is an organization of people who have voluntarily come together for the purpose of solving their socio-economic issues through initiatives, mutual support and investments aimed at benefiting equally the group members.

•    Voluntary and open membership
•    Democratic member control
•    Members economic participation
•    Autonomy and independence
•    Education, training and information
•    Cooperation and mutual support among the cooperatives
•    Concern for the community

Individual members who
• Are over the age of 18 years
• Have established a consistent savings track record with us
• Are an active member of our cooperative
• Have participated in all education and loan training sessions
• Have evidence of financial affordability and adequate security

The following will result in lose of membership;
•    Expulsion in accordance to your cooperative society’s by-laws
•    Death
•    Unsound mind
•    Voluntary withdrawal or resignation from your cooperative society
•    Collapse or dissolution of your cooperative society

As a member of a cooperative society, you are entitled to a number of rights, including the right to:
•    Attend general meetings and vote
•    Get a share of surplus income at the end of each year
•    Investments of your contributions in acquisition of land and properties
•    Apply for loans, in the case of SACCOs
•    Approve, reject or defer budget
•    Participate in amending the society’s by-laws
•    Fix borrowing powers of the societies
